Sati - The woman who waits - This 80 x 140 cm oil on canvas is an inspiration from SATI, an ancient Indian tradition. 'Sati' refers largely to a Hindu funeral practice in India, where a widow sacrifices herself by sitting on top of her deceased husband's funeral firewood.
However, the artist tries to get the true meaning of the term 'Sati' in her painting. 'Sati' not only refers to the funeral practice, but refers to the woman herself. In the old days, when men went on expeditions or in war, it is often a custom that their wives waited for months - perhaps years in prayer and believing that their husbands would return home safely. Everyone including her knows that the chances are too slim and for the most part she would end up sitting on funeral firewood. However, she does not give up her hope and prayer.
This 'Sati' in this painting is this woman waiting. She awaits her husband like a yogini in prayer, fights patiently against all odds for this solar system and in good faith that he will return
